Burgenland County

The official name of the county of (German) Burgenland is "Burgenlandkreis". On 16 July 2007 the county parliament decided to change the name again to Burgenlandkreis coming, which became valid on 1 August 2007 The Burgenlandkreis is a county in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Its capital is Naumburg city. The county was established by merging the former counties of Burgenlandkreis (1994 - 2007) and Weißenfels County as part of the administrative reform of 1 July 2007.

Burgenland Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, issuant from base a castle Gules masoned Sable with two embattled towers in flanks couped per pale, between the towers a grapevine with six berries Azure and two leaves Vert, the castle's wall is charged with an inescutcheon Or, charged with hammer and mallet Sable.
Meaning:
The castle (German: Burg) is a canting element. The grapevine is symbolising viticulture, hammer and mallet are symbolising mining.

New flag and arms were adopted on 18 December 2007 by county parliament (Kreistag). On 10 January 2008 the new symbols of the Burgenlandkreis have been officially presented. The parliament decided to amend theHauptsatzung, now describing the new symbols. More information (in German) here.

It is a red-white-red horizontal triband with ratio of stripes 1:2:1. The coat of arms is in the middle of the white stripe.

Shield Argent, issuant from base an embattled wall Gules, masoned Sable and charged with six balls Argent ordered 3:2:1, in chief a sword Gules and a key Gules in saltire.
Meaning:
The embattled wall as part of a castle (German: Burg) is a canting element. The balls are interpreted as a stylised grapevine and thus representing viticulture, sword and key are attributes of St. Paul and St. Peter, patron saints of Naumburg Cathedral. Furthermore they are referring to former Zeitz County and Naumburg County, which in 1994 merged with Nebra County, forming the old Burgenlandkreis. The arms were approved on 30 May 1991

Shield Or, a bend wavy Azure, in sinister chief an eagle Sable armed Or, in dexter base a quatrefoil natural Vert with stem, charged with hammer and mallet Sable.
Meaning:
The bend wavy is representing Saale River, the eagle is referring to Prussia, to which the area belonged since 1816. Quatrefoil, hammer and mallet are representing former Hohenmölsen County. Especially the quatrefoil was symbolising agriculture. Hammer and mallet were symbolising mining.

The colours had been those of the Zeitz city. Flag and banner never had been approved officially but were in use between 1990 and 1994.
