Description of banner:
It is a red - yellow vertical bicolour. In a yellow bannerhead is a red cow's head wearing a yellow headstall, below is a black Gothic (German Fraktur letters) inscription "Coesfeld (Westf.)".

Meaning:
According to source the cow's head is canting (Lower German: ko means "cow"). The image appeared first on seals in 1292 and on coins since 1578. The colours red and yellow have been taken from the arms of the bishopric of Münster.
