Introduction of Beverstedt

Beverstedt literally means beaver town. The location was first mentioned in 1228 and gained the rank of a market town (Flecken) in 1661 and had been the seat of a subcounty (Amt) including 40 municipalities. It was a dominion of the Archbishops of Bremen since the 11th century and since 1648 a possession of Sweden, Brunswick-Lüneburg, Denmark, France, Hannover and finally since 1866 of Prussia.
On 1 Februar 1971 the municipalities of Osterndorf and Wehldorf, on 1 March 1974 the municipalities of Wellen and Wollingst were incorporated.
On 1 November 2011 the municipalities of Appeln, Bokel, Frelsdorf, Heerstedt, Hollen, Kirchwistedt, Lunestedt and Stubben merged with the market town and formed the new municipality of Beverstedt. These entities had been part of the comprehensive municipality of Beverstedt from 1974(?) until 2011.

There had been 9 oak leaves instead, the beaver was impending, and the bar wavy was Argent on top of a base Vert. Already in 1950 the minister of interior of Lower Saxony approved a similar coat of arms for Beverstedt market town. Its shield was golden with a mountain issuant Vert in base superimposed by a bar wavy Argent. The beaver was also sejant but Sable armed and tongued Gules.
