Municipality of Poing

Today I present you the flag of Poing, a neighbouring village of my home in the county of Ebersberg, Bavaria, Germany.
At the homepage of Poing you can read about the coat of arms: (my translation)
"Azure an eight-pointed star Argent between a chevron enhanced Or and a bar abased Argent."
The symbols of the coat of arms, the golden "chevron enhanced" and silver star, were adopted from the arms of the family Prielmair, who had some manors in Poing in the 17th century to the coat of arms of the community. The silver and blue base of the shield shows the close linkage of the community to the Bavarian dukes and princes respectively. The blue filed repeats one more time the Bavarian colours.
About the flag: The flag of the community has three stripes in yellow-blue-white. The flag can bear the coat of arms of the community.
For my image, I used the coat of arms, published on the homepage. Normally communal flags in Germany are used as vertical flags, but I saw a brochure of Poing with this horizontal variation !
J. Patrick Fischer, 2 Dec 2005

The flag is indeed one of the rare Bavarian municipal flags that come in the horizontal variant (own observation and photos 23 May 2001 and 3 Oct 2001). They have a vertical variant ("Banner") as well (own observation and photos 29 Aug 2001).
Most of the horizontal municipal flags I have seen are from municipalities quite close to Munich, in the so-called "Speckgürtel" (bacon belt) (Pliening, Poing, Vaterstetten, Taufkirchen b. München, Neuried, Sauerlach).
My hypothesis is that the municipal administrations see this as a more "official" type of flag that is more apt for these municipalities that have grown considerably over the last few decades. It has a certain "we are not one of those rural communes with their hanging flag" touch.
