Sonnenstein was established on 1 December 2011, when the independent municipalities of Bockelnhagen, Holungen, Jützenbach, Silkerode, Steinrode, Stöckey, Weißenborn-Lüderode and Zwinge merged. All municipalities had been already connected before in the VG Eichsfeld-Südharz. Municipalities not mentioned below had no proper flags.

Bockelnhagen Coat of Arms

The shield is red, divided by a silver bend sinister, charged with a blue barrulet sinister, in dexter chief is a silver tower, in sinister base a silver fishhook.
Meaning:
Bockelnhagen consisted of the settlements of Bockelnhagen proper and Weilrode. The bend wavy is symbolizing the fountains of Weilröder Eller, a local creek. The hook is taken from the arms of the Lords of Bockelnhagen, a branch of the Rieme kin. The tower is representing the ruined castle of Allerburg.

Jützenbach Coat of Arms

The shield is red, divided by a silver bend sinister wavy. In dexter chief is a silver mitre, in sinister base a silver 6-spokes wheel.
Meaning:
The bend wavy is a canting element, representing the name giving Jützenbach, a local creek. The mitre is alluding to nearby Gerode monastery. The last two abbots of the monastery came from Jützenbach. The wheel is symbolizing the Archishops of Mainz, the former rulers.

Silkerode Coat of Arms

The shield is parted per pale, at dexter a red oak leaf in a silver field, at sinister a silver fishhook in a red field. The shield has a golden chief charged with a blue bar wavy.
Meaning:
The bar wavy is representing Silke creek, name giver of the municipality. The hook is taken from the arms of the Lords of Minnigerode, a branch of the Rieme kin and local rulers in the past. The leaf is symbolizing the local oak groves.

Stöckey Coat of Arms

The shield is mantled. The field above right is chequered of red and silver. The field above left is red, divided by a silver bend wavy. The field beneath is golden, issuant from base is a red linden bush.
Meaning:
The chequered field is alluding to the Counts of Hohenstein, the former rulers. The bend wavy is symbolizing the local Helme fountain. The bush is alluding to the fact, that the municipality was built by forest clearance in the middle ages. It is also a canting element, as the meaning of Stöckey is something like coppice. Furthermore linden trees are the predominant local species.

Weißenborn-Lüderode Coat of Arms

The shield is red with a silver base wavy parted twice. Above is a silver 6-spokes wheel. In chief are a mattock and a sword flamant in saltire, both are silver.
Meaning:
The wheel is alluding to the Archbishops of Mainz, the former rulers. The base wavy is canting, representing former Weißenborn (= white fountain) municipality and Weißenborn creek and Geröder eller creek as well. The mattock as an instrument of forest clearance is representing the former municipalities of Lüderode and Gerode. The suffix "-rode" is very common for settlements, which had been created by forest clearance. The sword is an attribute of St. Michael, patron saint of the Benedictine monastery of Gerode.
