Jöhstadt Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a kneeling angel, dressed and winged Argent with belt Azure, holding two escutcheons Azure, the dexter one in bend sinister charged with hammer and mallet Or, the sinister one in bend charged with a green fir, superimposed by a poking stick Sable bladed Azure and a rake Sable in saltire. In base a number Sable "1655".
Meaning:
A settlement was established in 1429. Due to the development of mining since 1513 the settlement grew and became a village in 1539, a mountain town (German: Bergstädtchen) in 1555 and a market town in 1591. The right for citizens of digging metal (German: Bergfreiheit) was granted in 1518, and finally city rights in 1655. A hammer mill was established in 1539. As mining of silver, copper and ore had not been particularly successful, charcoal burning became the most important business line. Fir and the tools of a charcoal burner, rake and poking stick, had been already displayed on the oldest town seal from 1553. Hammer and mallet and the number were added in 1655, the year, when Jöhstadt gained city rights. Source doesn´t say anything about the angel. The banner contains the so called "welcome shield" (German: Begrüßungsschild) and not the city arms. That shield can be seen at the city limits on major roads. It is an oval shield greyish blue, showing a yellow dressed angel statant with black hair and a fir Vert with the crossed charcoal burner´s tools in front of it. In base on a blue inescutcheon are black hammer and mallet, the whole is flanked by an embowed golden scroll and by black inscriptions "JS" and "1655". The oval shield maybe based on the oldest seal. The shield has two miners in formal robe as supporters alongside the city limits but not on banner.
