Oelsnitz Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter on mount Vert with a top of ore Argent a miner dressed Maron with plumes Vert on his cap, holding a pickaxe Azure hafted Maron by his dexter hand, a box Azure by his sinister hand and a pit lamp Azure fixed on the buttons of his coat; at sinister on mount Vert three connected alders of the same trunked Maron.
Meaning:
Oelsnitz was a possession of the Electorate of Sachsen since the 16th century. In 1585 a major part was acquired by the Lords of Schönburg. The three settlement cores were re-united in 1839. The miner is symbolising the depletion of black coal since 1818. The alders are canting, as the name is derived from the Slavic word Olcen (= alder) which was modified to Elsen by the German settlers. Oelsnitz gained city rights in 1924.
