Freren Coat of Arms

[SG Freren and Freren city coat of arms] image by Jörg Majewski, 12 Nov 2007
coat of arms adopted: probably 1723

Shield Or, three water lily leaves Vert fixed on a stem.
Meaning:
Freren had been seat of a subcounty (Amt) and gained city rights in 1723, was however downgraded to a rural municipality in the 19th century, and regained the city rank in 1950. The first seals were made in the 19th century, probably in 1804 for the very first time. The displayed a crown on the shield. The water lily by the locals is called "Aa-flower". The colours of the shield are alluding to the sandy hills between the swamps of local Aa River.
The current arms were approved in 1935. According to Fettweis probably there had been arms granted already in 1723 together with the city rank.

The tau-cross is an attribute of St. Anthony, the local patron saint. Messingen got its own parish church, dedicated to St. Anthony, in 1806. The knife (German: Messer) is a canting element, if the municipality's name is derived from "Messer".
The arms were approved on 24 February 1988, the flag later in the same year.
