Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a round tower Argent with basement and two oriels, all roofed Gules; flanked by two inescutcheons, at dexter Argent three chevrons Gules, at sinister Or a chief Gules.
Meaning:
King Ludwig the Bavarian granted city rights in 1321. The oldest known seal of the city dates from the early 14th century already displays a tower. On the oldest seal the tower was flanked by two inescutcheons, showing the arms of the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein, who at the time ruled the city. When the city was acquired by the Lords of Eppstein, the dexter shield was replaced by the shield with the red chevrons of Eppstein. The new pattern can also be found in a sculpture of the local church from 1470. Through the centuries the position of both inescutcheons changed frequently. The current order is in use since Otto Hupp painted it in the 1920ies.
