Breisach Coat of Arms

Shield Or an eagle Sable armed Gules, upon his breast an inescutcheon Gules charged with a 6-fold mount Argent ordered 1:2:3.
Meaning:
Until 26 June 1961 the name of the city had been simply Breisach. The first city seal was announced in 1234 and 1245. A print from 1266 displays probably the same pattern. It displayed a gate with two towers beneath and St. Mary with Child on a throne above. In 1275 Breisach became a Free Imperial City and used since then the imperial eagle on its seals. Since 1793 the inescutcheon was added, displaying the arms of the Lords of Grünenberg. The inescutcheon was already used since the 15th century on local coins. At that time the family had occupied the mayoralty (Local: Oberschultheißenamt) during a few generations. In 1805 the city lost its status and became a part of the Grand Duchy of Baden and used since then the inescutcheon alone and omitted the imperial eagle. The version with eagle was restored in 1956. The shape of eagle and inescutcheon changed slightly in detail during the centuries. Sometimes the eagle was standing on top of the 6-fold mount without inescutcheon.
