Neuenburg Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a bend Or.
Meaning:
Neuenburg had been a Free Imperial City from 1218 until 1250 and again since 1274. It was pawned to the Dukes of Austria in 1331 and remained part of Hither Austria (Vorderösterreich) until 1806, when it was acquired by Baden. The arms are based on the oldest city seal from 1261. According to Clemens Stadler then there had been a short period, in which the city was ruled by the Margraves of Baden-Freiburg. He concludes that the bend on the seal was that one of Baden. The arms remained the same. Siebmacher (1605) depicted them red with a golden bend. Lions as supporters appeared on a secret seal from 1600 and since the 19th century continuously in the city arms. The tinctures were counterchanged in the 19th century, when the city belonged to Baden. The old tinctures of 1605 were restored in 1973, probably to avoid mismatch with the symbols of Baden. The city's name changed to Neuenburg am Rhein on 18 March 1975, published in GABl 437/1975.
