In a red shield are two silver (= white), addorsed fish. Between them is a golden (= yellow) initial "F". The shield has a golden (= yellow) chief, superimposed by a black attire.
Meaning:
The town was founded in 1599 by Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg as a village for (Austrian) miners alongside the road from Ulm to Straßburg. Already in 1600 it gained city rights and its proper arms. The attire is symbolizing the former rulers, the Dukes of Württemberg, while the two fish (barbs) are taken from the arms of the County of Mömpelgard (French: Montbéliard), another possession of the Dukes of Württemberg. Friedrich I was born in Mömpelgard, hence the two fish were added to the arms of the city. The initial "F" is representing the founder and the name of the city as well. Images of the arms appear within paintings since 1601 and on seal since 1612. Until 1950 the arms remained unchanged. In 1950 the tincture of the fish was changed from golden to silver.
