Ettal Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess, above Or an issuant double headed eagle Sable armed Gules, beneath Azure the word "etal" in Gothic minuscles Or.
Meaning:
The foundation and development of the municipality is closely connected with the famous namesake Benedictine Abbey, with full name "Abbey of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary". It was founded in 1332 by German King and Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian and is nowadays one of the most famous Baroque abbeys in Bayern. Today it is a touristic hotspot. A great farm, a few inns, a grammar school with an annexed boarding school, a publishing house, a distillery and a brewery belong to the abbey. The double headed eagle is the imperial eagle and alluding to Ludwig the Bavarian. It is also part of the new arms of the abbey. The lower half displays the oldest arms of the abbey. Its existence is proven since 1420 and it had been the only coat of arms of the abbey until the 17th century.
