Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per chevron ployé into silver (= white) over red. Below is a silver (= white) church standing on a green base. Above right is green, rooted oak. Above left is a black swan armed red.
Meaning:
Silver and red had been the colours of the Counts of Berg (red lion in silver shield). Silver and bblack had been the colours of Prussia and silver and green had been the colours of the Rhineprovince. The figures are canting, representing the municipalities, here called "Honschaften", which formed the city in 1873. Those were Eich (oak), Schwanen (swan) and Wermelskirchen (church).
