Löbau Coat of Arms

Shield Gules two towers Or connected by an ogive of the same topped by a crosslet, under the ogive a double queued lion rampant Argent.
Meaning:
Löbau was first mentioned as a town in 1221 and as a city in 1268, ruled by the Kings of Böhmen. Since 1238 it was ruled by a royal reeve and gained the right to elect its own mayor and council during the 14th century. It was walled since the beginning of the century and gained the cognisance over 36 villages. In 1346 it joined the Alliance of six Upper Lusatian Cities. The convents of the alliance were held in Löbau until 1868. In 1547 the alliance was punished by later King Ferdinand I and sentenced to give away its estates and privileges. The cognisance was regained in 1562 and most of all other privileges in 1564 after the death of the king. After a fire in 1710 the city was rebuilt in Baroque style. The arms are based on the oldest town seal from 1254. The lion is a differentiation of the Bohemian royal arms wirhout crown. Between 1336 and 1632 the lion had been raplaced by St. Nicolas, the local patron saint.
