Niesky Coat of Arms

Shield Azure an embattled wall Or masoned Sable and issuant from base, in chief an impending cross Or and an impending hammer Or in saltire.
Meaning:
In 1742 S.A. of Gersdorf settled Bohemeian religious refugees on the surroundings of Trebus Manor, which he owned. Since 1745 Imperial Count Nikolaus Ludwig of Zinsendorf himself established a community (German: Brüdergemeine) according to the statutes of the Herrnhut Community. Houses for unmarried brothers and sisters were finished in 1746, a hall for church service in 1756. Crafts and manufactures settled down and made products of high quality. German, Czech, Swedish, Danish and Swiss craftsmen lived together in the city. In 1760 a high level school was established, in 1869 and1873 schools for the training of missionaries and teachers were added. Niesky gained city rights in 1935. The embattled wall is taken from the Upper Lusatian arms. The cross is alluding to the Herrnhut Community and the hammer is representing crafts and industries.
