Helmstedt Coat of Arms

[Helmstedt city CoA] image by Jörg Majewski, 19 June 2007

Shield Azure, issuant from base an embattled wall Argent masoned Sable with port Azure, crowned by an arch trefoily Argent crowned by three buildings Argent with roofs Gules, in centre a saint, sitting on a throne Or, robed Gules with mitre Gules and Or, holding a crozier Or in his right hand and a book Or, charged with a cross Sable, in his left hand.
Meaning:
The arms are taken from the first main seal from 1232, which already displayed St. Ludger, first bishop of Münster and patron saint of Helmstedt. The saint is also alluding to the Ludger Monastery. Its abbots had been the local rulers until 1490, when the city was acquired by the dukes of the Welfen kin. Smaller seals from the 14th century displayed the same pattern. The New March, being a ducal possession, had its proper seal, disolaying the lion of the Welfen kin. Since 1568 the city arms, known from buildings and seals, displayed two croziers in saltire, representing the monasteries of Helmstedt and Werden. They were called "spoons" by the local people.
The arms based on the first seal were approved officially in 1900.
