It belonged to the latter until 1918. Themar was mentioned as a city in 1317 and had been walled since the late 15th century. The main business lines had been textiles industries, rafting and timber industry. The city was completely destroyed during the 30-Years-War in 1634. The oldest city seal from 1341 displayed a tree between two hens on triplemounts. The current pattern appeared first on city seals since the 15th century. The quartered shield is referring to the Henneberg kin. The 1st and 4th quarter display their family arms, the 2nd and 3rd quarters their arms as imperial reeves and Burgraves of Nürnberg.
