Eisfeld Coat of Arms

Shield Or a lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules, holding an eradicated linden Vert by his forepaws.
Meaning:
Eisfeld was populated by Franconian settlers since 802. It was called a town in 1316. Since 1323 the Counts of Henneberg built a walled new town above from the first settlement. The city was acquired by the Burgraves of Nürnberg in 1353, the Margraves of Meißen in 1379, the Electorate of Sachsen in 1485, the Duchy of Sachsen-Gotha in 1645, the Duchy of Sachsen-Hildburghausen in 1680 and the Duchy of Sachsen-Meiningen in 1826. City rights probably had been granted in 1323 to both united towns. Since then also a city council existed. A mayor was reported in the 15th century. Old city seals show the lion with an intial "E". Since the middle of the 17th century the intial was replaced by a linden sapling, probably a symbol of the rebuilding, after the city had been destroyed twice during the 30-Years-War (1618 – 1648). The current tinctures of the lion are those of the lion of the margraves, older versions showed the lion of Thüringen, being barry of eight of red and white.
