Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess; above Azure a demi-lion issuant barry of five of Argent and Gules, crowned and armed Or; beneath parted per pale, at dexter Gules a 6-spokes wheel Argent, at sinister Or a Gothic number four.
Meaning:
The lion is a modification of the lion of Hesse. The wheel in dexter base is representing the Archbishopric of Mainz. The sinister base displays a canting symbol, actually one half of a Gothic number Eight, thus becoming a number Four (German: vier). That number already appears in the oldest court seal, mentioned in 1549 with prints since 1615 besides the Palatinate lion and the lozenges of the Wittelsbach kin. The city had been a part of the Palatinate from 1533 til 1650. After the city had become a part of the Archbishopric of Mainz the arms displayed the wheel above and the number Four below.
The current arms were approved on 14 April 1926 and the addition of the lion indicated that the city is now part of Hesse.
