Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a silver(=white) Gothic vault flanked by two towers of the same colour. The ensemble is topped by three fleur de lis of the same colour. Beneath the vault is a silver(=white) shield, divided by three green pallets, which upon the chief are superimposed by a red fess with three golden(=yellow) balls.
Meaning:
According to source the arms are taken from the city's main seal from 1316. The shield there is taken from the arms of the lords of Brakel, which had been administrators of the city in service of archbishopric of Paderborn.
The city itself gives an overwhelming meaning of allusions to Christianity which is however denied by Veddeler as not based on facts.

Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by Regierungspräsident Detmold on 6 October 1977.
