Arnstadt Coat of Arms

Shield Or an eagle Sable armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
Arnstadt was first mentioned in 704, when the nobleman Heden donated his estate to the Bishopric of Utrecht and is thus the oldest settlement mentioned in a charter on the area of the former GDR. The settlement was acquired by the Echternach Abbey in 726, later in the 10th century by the German kings and the Hersfeld Abbey, which granted city rights in 1220. Around 1050 there had been a local mint. During the 13th century the rights were usurped by the reeves of the Abbey, the Counts of Schwarzburg-Käfernburg, who gained complete control since 1332, but until 1731 only as vassals of the Wettin kin. In 1684 Arnstadt became seat of a branch of the Princes of Schwarzburg. Around 1800 Arnstadt had the biggest grain trade of Thüringen. Between 1716 and 1918 it had been a possession of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. The eagle was already displayed on coins of the Hersfeld Abbey around 1200. The oldest seal from 1322 displayed the eagle between two Gothic towers of a city gate. The towers were abolished on later seals and since then seals and arms remained basically the same. The eagle (German: Aar) is considered to be canting, as the name of the city means "city of the eagle(s)". The complete armourial bearings of Arnstadt, which are no longer used, displayed a helmet with a mural crown and an eagle as crest. The eagle in the local arms here has nothing to do with the imperial eagle. Arnstadt is the seat of Ilm County.

The arms are traditional. The flag colours are in use at least since 1941.
