Stadtilm Coat of Arms

Italian shield Azure, the western façade of a church Argent with two towers and open gate, in chief a comb Argent partially superimposed by a helmet of the same.
Meaning:
Ruled by the Schwarzburg kin, the village gained town rights in 1224 and city rights in 1274. Until 1388 it was divided into two parts ruled by different branches of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Käfernburg. It belonged to the Princes of Scharzburg-Rudolfstadt between 1571 and 1918. The shield displays the local parish church, a bridge, connecting both towers was removed in 1899. The pattern often changed in details. In times of the GDR the connecting bridge was part of the pattern. Otto Hupp (1925) displayed a red embattled wall with two towers with blue roofs, between the towers was an impending helmet, crested with peacock feathers and a red disc indented. His image was based on local seals, used from the 13th until the 15th century. Lack of heraldic feeling in the 18th century replaced the helmet by a simplified version superimposing a comb, taken from the arms of the Schwarzburg kin.

Ilmtal Coat of Arms

Shield Vert, an eradicated linden Or with 21 leaves, abased superimposed by a fess wavy Argent.
Meaning:
The linden had been a common element in the old seals of the former municipalities. The 21 leaves are referring to the 21 villages and hamlets of the municipality. The fess wavy is a representation of the name giving Ilm River.
