Coat of Arms

Shield sable, a facetted 8-point star Or.
Meaning:
Wildungen was founded about 1242. The oldest seal from 1258 displayed the Count of Thuringia, the former ruler, as a mounted knight without banner and sword. In 1262 the city became a dominion of the Counts of Waldeck. Consequentially the next seal from the same year displayed the star of Waldeck. The star also appeared in a 14th century seal of Wildungen's lower city (Niederstadt). Seals of Alt-Wildungen from the 15th and 16th century displayed the lower half of the star and a lady issuant from star, which was denoted either as St. Mary or as the "wild woman" alluding to the city's name. In the 18th century the black star in gold, was changed to a golden star in black, to distinguish the arms of the city from those of the Counts of Waldeck.
