It is a red-white vertical bicolour. The coat of arms is shifted to the top. Beneath the arms is a black unserifed (see left image) or Gothic (see right image) inscription "Hofgeismar".

Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a gate Argent, having a central tower with dome, flanked by four connected pinnacles, in base an 8-spokes wheel Argent.
Meaning:
Hofgeismar was first mentioned as a city around 1220/30, and the oldest seal of the city is known from 1234, displaying a church tower behind a city wall. A second seal from 1266 displayed a tower, flanked by two wheels of Mainz, and the Archbishop of Mainz in the portal. The secret seal from 1300 shows some architecture around a single wheel. This was simplified in the next seal from 1418. Since 1621 the armourials displayed a coat of arms with a fortification and the lion of Hesse. Hofgeismar, which belonged to the Archbishopric of Mainz until 1583, afterwards became a dominion of Hesse. The current arms are based on the seal from 1418, having the colours of Mainz.
