Kassel County Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per bend sinister into blue over gold (= yellow). Above is a demi-lion issuant, striped silver (= white) and red and crowned golden (= yellow). Below are three green oak leaves, ordered like a fan and superimposed by two black wolf traps.
Meaning:
The Hessian lion is symbolizing the affiliation with Hesse. The leaves are representing St. Bonifatius, who felled the oak of ancient German God Donar (aka Thor) in order to prove the supremacy of Christianity over the pagan gods. They are also representing the former Hofgeismar County, which had a silver oak in its arms. The wolf traps are representing the former Wolfhagen County and have replaced the wolf in the former county arms. The three counties merged on 1 August 1972.

Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved on 9 May 1975.
