Dettelbach Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a castle Gules with stepped gable and two embattled towers, in port Argent a bishop issuant dressed Gules, holding a crozier by his left hand and rising his right hand for blessing, on central base an inescutcheon parted per fess, above Azure a flag quartered of Argent and Gules in bend fixed by a lance Or, beneath Gules a fess wavy Argent.
Meaning:
The quartered flag and the bishop are alluding to the Bishopric of Würzburg, to which the city historically belonged. The castle is symbolising the city status. The fess wavy is a canting element, referring to "Bach" (= creek) in the city's name. In the 19th century and the early 20th century seals and arms only displayed the inescutcheon. The current pattern was again introduced before 1965. Dettelbach gained city rights in 1484. The first city seal from 1498 already displayed the pattern of the current arms. After 1500 all greater seals and some architectural sculptures displayed the same pattern.
