Marktschorgast Coat of Arms

Baroque shield Or a heraldic rose Gules seeded Or and barbed Vert.
Meaning:
The town had been a possession of the Bishopric of Bamberg since 1293. An architectural sculpture from 1712 on the façade of the town hall, made by Henricus Sexdel, claims erroneously that the arms had been granted in 1323. The sculpture displayed the pattern on the current flag with a Baroque shield. It is however assumed that the arms were granted by Friedrich of Aufseß, who had been Bishop of Bamberg between 1421 and 1431. The family arms of the Lords of Aufseß displayed the red rose on a white fess in a blue shield. The tinctures within the sources had always been different. The Roll of Vassals of the Bishopric of Bamberg from 1603 displayed a silver (=white) rose in a red shield. The complete heraldic literature of the 19th century displayed a silver (=white) rose in a blue shield. Otto Hupp (1925) and Klemens Stadler (1968) displayed the arms in the tinctures of the Aufseß family arms, i.e. a red rose in a white (=silver) shield. There is still a lot of confusion, even the webpage Haus der bayerischen Geschichte describes the version with a white (=silver) shield but the image within the same page shows a yellow (=golden) shield.
