Stadtsteinach Coat of Arms

Shield Or, a lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules, superimposed by a bendlet Argent.
Meaning:
Stadtsteinach gained city rights in the middle of the 14th century and had been a possession of the Bishopric of Bamberg much earlier. The first seal, probably made between 1333 and 1466, already displayed the lion of the bishopric. The same pattern remained in all seals until the end of the 18th century. The Roll of Vassals of the Bishopric of Bamberg (1603) and Siebmachers Roll of Arms (1605) displayed the lion with an embattled wall in base as distinguishing mark. Acc. to Otto Hupp the version with wall had been the actual city arms and that one without wall just the arms of the Bishopric. Between 1819 and 1836 the lion as an undesirable symbol of a former ruler was arbitrarily replaced by a silver chevron in a blue shield. In 1956 the wall was omitted by a decision of the city council.

The arms are in use since the 14th century. The current arms were adopted in 1956 by the city council.
