Rottenburg Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, issuant from base an embattled wall Argent masoned Sable, topped by a gate house of the same with stepped gable and roof Azure between an embattled quadrangular tower Argent at dexter and a round tower Argent with cone roof Azure.
Meaning:
Rottenburg gained the privileges of the market town in 1378 and was elevated to a city in 1971. The castle (German: Burg) in a red (German: rot) field is canting. The original pattern probably displayed the details of that version of the castle, which was destroyed in 1632. The image was changed several times in details during the centuries. In the 18th century sometimes the apocryphal arms of the Counts of Kirchberg had been considered to be the town arms of Rottenburg, e.g. depicted by Wening in 1721. Their arms had been Vair with a chief Gules. The current arms are based on a town seal, known by prints since 1396. The seal probably was granted on occasion of the extension of market privileges in 1393. The versions of Apian (1585), Mielich (1568) and Hupp (1925) are based on the oldest town seal. Older versions of the city banner simply display a white castle on a red shield with white bordure.

The banner has never been approved officially and the arms are in use without approval since the 14th century.
