Markgröningen Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden shield is a black eagle, armed and tongued red. The light blue chief is superimposed by five golden 6-point stars.
Meaning:
City rights were granted to Markgröningen in 1240 by Emperor Friedrich II. Markgröningen since then was a free imperial city, until it became a dominion of Württemberg in 1336. The oldest seal, prints exist since 1299, only displays the imperial eagle. A colour print from 1535 displays an additional plain, green chief, erroneously denoted as a symbol of Duke Christoph. The chief with stars probably is a distinguishing mark of the city. In Markgröningen the imperial assault banner had been retained. Note that the yellow colour of the sheet and the golden colour within the shield are different.
Source: Stadler 1971, p.70

The banner is used since the 18th century. According to Stadler the banner was however blue - yellow.
