Bardowick Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a castle Argent having three towers, the central tower slightly higher, with roofs Vert ending in a dome. In front of the gate is an inescutcheon Gules charged with three carrots Argent leafed Vert.
Meaning:
According to source the castle is a remembrance to former importance, having had city rights until 1189. The carrots are symbolizing the cultivation of vegetables in the area in 19th century. According to Mrs. Ursula Schwanitz-Roth from municipal archive the image is based on a seal from 16th century. The arms had been approved after long struggles by the authorities of Lower Saxony in 1950. The colours being unknown had been chosen arbitrarily.
The approved arms showed however green triangular roofs. But this version never came in use. The current arms are based on a draft from 1950, made by the local artist Hugo Friedrich Hartmann, showing silver(=white) roofs ending in a dome, the castle was masoned black and the inescutcheon with the carrots was superimposing an open(=black) gate. These arms are also upon nowadays flag.
