Meaning:
Gartow was ruled by the Lords of Gartowe and the Order of St.John. In 1441 the Lords of Bülow acquired the market town, which was already mentioned as a small city in the 14th century. The Lords of Bülow had a castle in the market town and ruled it until 1694, when probably the current arms were adopted, being a modification of the family arms of the Bülow kin, who displayed between 11 and 14 balls. The first evidence of the existence of the arms was a seal from 1800, stressing the rank of a city in its circumscription. In seals from around 1970 the balls were erroneously displayed as annulets.
