It is a 5-stripes-banner with alternating vertical blue and white stripes having ratio 1:1:2:1:1 and the coat of arms shifted to the top.

Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver(=white) shield is a blue S-shaped serpent surrounding above two green oak leaves with stem and an acorn, below a red heraldic rose seeded and barbed golden(=yellow).
Meaning:
According to source the arms are canting. Furthermore the name of the city begins with a capital "S". The rose is symbolizing that the municipality belonged to the principality of Lippe while the oaks are symbolizing the oldest name from 1015 Lanchel. Its understood that it meant "long wood".

Flag and banner were approved by Regierungspräsident Detmold on 28 April 1961. The coat of arms was approved on 19 January 1950 by minister of interior of Northrhine-Westphalia. It was reconfirmed on 16 July 1970 by Regierungspräsident Detmold.
