The city became a possession of the Counts of Hohnstein in 1348 and of the Counts of Schwarzburg in 1412/1417 as vassals of the Margraviate of Meißen. It belonged to the Electorate of Saxony until 1815, when it was acquired by Prussia. A local seal probably made around 1500 displayed the calf under two impending shields, at dexter displaying a lion, the family arms of the Counts of Schwarzburg and at sinister displaying a stag, the family arms of the Counts of Stolberg. The latter had pawned the city to the former. On a seal from 1608 the calf (German Plural: Kälber) was displayed alone as a canting element.
