Sulzbach Coat of Arms

Shield Gules two salt hooks Argent in saltire, flanked by an inescutcheon Argent charged with three chevrons Gules in chief, a 6-spokes wheel Argent at dexter and a fleur-de-lis Argent at sinister.
Meaning:
The hooks are referring to the local production of salt since 1433. They are canting elements, as the name of the municipality is derived from slted water (German: Sulza). The salt wells in the neighbouring Soden had been an important economic base until 1750 due to the salt taxes. Soden had been a brine spa between 1856 and the end of WW1, when its name had been Bad Sodenthal in order to distinguish from Bad Soden. The wheel is alluding to the Archbishopric of Mainz, which ruled the village until 1803. The fleur-de-lis is taken from the arms of the Lords of Sulzbach, commissionaires of the archbishopric. The kin died out around 1500. The inescutcheon displays the family arms of the Lords of Eppstein, who owned estates since the 11th century and held the local fiefdom at least until 1425, probably even until 1544, when the kin died out. Sulzbach was established in 1972 by a merger of Dornau, Soden and Sulzbach proper and gained the title of a market town in 1973.
