Altentreptow Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a castle Gules, masoned Sable with port and windows Sable, three embattled towers with cone roofs, topped by swallow tail pennants Or on balls of the same, at sinister a griffin rampant Gules armed Or climbing up the bigger central tower, all over a base Vert charged with three creeks Argent, merging beneath the port of the castle.
Meaning:
Altentreptow was first mentioned 1175 and as a city in 1425. The city belonged to Pommern-Stettin since 1295, to Pommern-Wolgast since 1532. In 1534 the introduction of the Protestant Reformation in Pommern was proclaimed in Altentreptow. In 1637 the Dukes of Pommern became extinct and Altentreptow was administrated by Sweden, which acquired the city in 1648. Since 1720 it belonged to Prussia. The arms are based on a print of a city seal from the 15th century. The castle is symbolising a fortified city. The base is representing the Tollense River and its arms (the city is located on an island), which divided the old town and the new town. The griffin is taken from the arms of the Dukes of Pommern, the former rulers.

The flag was approved on 6 July 1995 by Minister of Interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The arms are traditional and were according to source redesigned in 1996 (!). Both were published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.25.
