    Meaning:
The history of Neustrelitz actually is the history of two cities: Strelitz (old) and Neustrelitz. The settlement Strelitz was first mentioned in 1278. In 1329 it became a possession of the Lords of Mecklenburg. On 4 December 1349 city rights according to the Brandenburg pattern were granted by the Counts Otto and Ulrich of Fürstenberg. In 1701 Strelitz became the residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Duke Adolf Friedrich III of Mecklenburg-Strelitz built a new hunting lodge between 1726 and 1731, after the former castle burnt down in 1712. In 1733 he began to build a new city in Baroque style, which was called Neustrelitz. (Old) Strelitz declined after 1733 and was incorporated into Neustrelitz in 1931. The Stargard arm is stressing that the city historically belonged to the Lordship of Stargard. The bull's head is the heraldric animal of Mecklenburg.

The arms were probably granted in 1794 by the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, redesigned in 1990 and published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.216. Flag and banner were not approved officially.
