    Nordwestmecklenburg County

The county was established in 1994 by a merger of the former counties of Gadebusch, Grevesmühlen and Wismar. Added were parts of the counties of Sternberg and Schwerin-Land. Due to administrative change in 2011 the county free Hanseatic City of Wismar was added to the county and the seat was changed from Grevesmühlen to Wismar.

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or, demi-bull's head caboshed and couped per pale Sable, crowned Or and tongued Gules; at sinister barry of four of Argent and Gules a crozier in counterchanged colours in pale (see left image above).
    Meaning:
The county arms are basically those of the Hanseatic City of Wismar. Just the crozier in counterchanged colours was added. The dexter half had also been part of the old arms of the county, which were abolished in 2012. The bull's head is also representing the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin as former rulers, while the crozier is representing the Bishopric of Ratzeburg.

Flag and arms were approved on 15 February 2012 by Minister of Interior of mecklenburg-Vorpommern and adopted on 19 April 2012 by the county council.

    Nordwestmecklenburg Coat of Arms (1996 - 2012)

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or, demi-bull's head caboshed and couped per pale Sable, crowned Or and tongued Gules; at sinister Azure a crozier Or in pale (see right image above).
    Meaning:
The bull's head is alluding to the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, who ruled the eastern part of the current county. The crozier is taken from the arms of the Bishopric of Ratzeburg, to which the smaller western part historically belonged. The crozier appeared first in the personal arms of Bishop Detlev of Parkentin (1395 - 1419).
