Marktbergel Coat of Arms

Shield quartered, 1st and 4th quarter Argent a grapevine Azure leafed Vert, 2nd and 3rd quarter Sable.
Meaning:
The Burgraves of Nürnberg acquired estates in the settlements Niederhofen, Weiler and Bergel. They merged at the latest in 1415 forming Bergel market town. Upon approval by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian the village of Bergel had already been elevated to a city by Burgrave Friedrich of Nürnberg in 1328. Although the elevation was confirmed in 1355 by Emperor Karl IV the city rights remained defunct. Thus city seals are not known before the 16th century. The quartered shield displays the arms of the Zollern kin, who had been Burgraves of Nürnberg and later Margraves of Brandenburg.The grapevines are symbolising viticulture. A painting from 1717 displays them in golden quarters. A roll of arms from 1767 displayed the quarters counterchanged. Since 1962 the epithet "Markt" was added to the name of the town.
