Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Azure, two lion rampant respectant, armed and tongued Gules, supporting a pretzel Or beneath and a coronet Or above.
Meaning:
The oldest known secret seal of the market town of Nörten from around 1550 only displayed the pretzel. The pretzel usually is considered to represent the old bakery industry in the city. In the market town's seal from the late 17th century the coronet was added and the ensemble was flanked by two oak branches. In the 18th century the branches were replaced by the lions, probably derived from the arms of Hannover, as the town was acquired by the Electorate of Hannover in 1692. In 1928/1929 Marienstein Municipality and Hardenberg Estate were incorporated into Nörten, and the newly formed market town kept the former arms of Nörten, which were also not changed after the mergers in 1974.
