The ratio is given as 1:2. It was a yellow over red horizontal bicolour. The information is confirmed by Stadler 1970, p.62

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Vert, issuant from base a triplemount Gules, the mount is charged with a lion passant Or tongued Gules, the mount is crowned by a castle Argent having three towers roofed Gules and charged with a minuscule letter "n" and by two more freestanding towers of the same.
Meaning:
Northeim gained city rights before 1250. The arms are based on the oldest seal is from the late 13th century. The triplemount is not mentioned, but blazon instead denotes the shield as parted "trefoily" of Vert and Gules. The lion is taken from the arms of the Welfen kin, who ruled the city for many centuries. The two freestanding towers were added in the early 18th century. A counter seal from the 14th century and the arms in the Sassenchronik Roll of Arms just displayed an initial "N" as arms.
