Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Argent; an embattled wall Gules, crowned by two embattled towers Gules with blue domes; in centre connected by a basement Gules, charged with an inescutcheon Argent displaying a green initial "V" and crowned by a lion statant Azure armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
The arms are mainly based on the oldest seal of the city, which is known since the late 13th century. This seal showed a gate with two church towers and between the towers the so-called lion-monument in Braunschweig, built in 1166. The lion in the monument is taken from the Welfen kin, at that time Dukes of Braunschweig, who also ruled Uslar. A later secret seal from 1642 displays the same pattern. Since 1712 there had been freestanding towers, between them above the lion and beneath the initial "V" (a Roman "U") of the city.
The arms are approved in 1935 by Oberpräsident of Prussian Hannover Province and were slightly changed in designe and confirmed in 1952 by Minister of Interior of Lower Saxony.
