Illertissen Coat of Arms

Shield Gules a lion rampant Or, over all a slightly abased fess sable charged with three initials Argent "PPP".
Meaning:
In 1488 Emperor Friedrich III granted arms, displaying a Moorish (negro) woman issuant, crowned by a black mitre and holding a branch in her right hand. Those arms had been a differentiation of the arms of the Counts of Kirchberg. The 2nd coat of arms is known by a city seal from around 1530. The yellow lion is taken from the arms of the Vöhlin of Frickenhausen kin, local rulers over the then market town. The original family arms had been however Argent, parted by a fess Sable, charged with "PPP" Argent.
It is supposed that thy are a abbreviation of the following Latin sentences:
"Piper Peperit Pecuniam" (the pepper brought the money)
"Pecunia Peperit Pompam" (the money brought the pomp)
"Pompa Peperit Pauperiem" (the pomp brough the poverty)
"Pauperies Peperit Pietatem" (the poverty brought the piety)
"Pugnantes pro Pontifice" (combatants for the Pope)
The black fess had been blue after 1757. The initials had been forbidden since 1814. Since 1925 the old arms were restored by Otto Hupp.
