Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a fish Argent between three 6-point stars of the same ordered 1:2.
Meaning:
A local castle belonged to the Lords of Eilenburg around 1300 and was a possession of the Counts of Lynar since 1621. Lübbenau was mentioned as a fortified town since 1315. It became a possession of the Electorate of Saxony in 1635 and of Prussia in 1815. The main business lines had been weaving of linen and farming vegetables, especially cucumbers. Around 1650 Jan Chojnan edited the first grammar of the Sorbian language in Lübbenau. The city is called the gate of the Spreewald, a biosphere reserve with many little channels. The fish is probably alluding to the location. The stars are taken from the arms of the Lords of Eilenburg. The oldest seal from the 16th century, published in "Diplomatarium Ileburgense" (Magdeburg 1877), displayed the stars in the usual order 2:1. The colour of the stars and details of the fish changed frequently in the past.
