Ortenau County Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a double-headed eagle Sable, armed and tongued Gules, upon his breast an inescutcheon Or, a saint in clad armour Argent mounted on a horse salient Sable, coated Gules and killing a dragon Vert in base by a lance Argent.
Meaning:
The Offenburg county arms were based on the arms of the Kanton Ortenau of the League of Imperial Knights (Reichsritterschaft), which also showed the Imperial Eagle with its patron saint St. George on an inescutcheon. At least seven villages and 20 castles were owned by the League until 1806. The rest of the county was owned by Austria, as well as by some local rulers. It also includes the Imperial Cities of Offenburg and Gengenbach. As a combination of symbols for all these territories would be impossible, it was decided to use the arms of the most important rulers.

The arms were approved for Offenburg County on 11 October 1962 and confirmed for Ortenau County on 31 August 1973.
