Harpstedt Coat of Arms

Shield parted per fess of Azure and Argent, over all a harp Or.
Meaning:
In 1396 Count Otto of Hoya granted the rights of a market town. The harp is a canting element. It already appeared on local seals since the 18th century and was confirmed expressis verbis in 1841 on occassion of the introduction of a municipal constitution. Already the earliest arms displayed a shield parted per fess, but there also existed versions with a harp on a monochrome blue shield. The seal of the town (German: Flecken) from the 20th century displayed the harp without shield. Also the old seal of the Harpstedt Subcounty (German: Amt) displayed the bars of the Grand Dukes of Oldenburg at dexter and the harp at sinsiter. The grand dukes had been the local liege lords until 1667.
