Neuenkirchen Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a chain Sable in fess, in chief a broken bladed wheel Gules, in base a branch of holly with three leaves, the stem set in fess.
Meaning:
The name "Neuenkirchen" is very common for German municipalities. Thus the local people added the suffix "im Hülsen" as a distinguishing element. The branch of holly (Latin: Ilex aquifolium; Lower German: Hülse) is thus a canting element. The number of leaves is representing the three municipalities of Neuenkirchen: Neuenkirchen im Hülsen, Merzen and Voltlage. The stem is symbolising the growth of a common identity. The chain is taken from the arms of Merzen, based on a legend, that two locals miraculously got rid of their chains from Turkish imprisonment by hanging them on an oak near the church. The colours black and green are taken from the arms of the municipalities: Black is the colour of the wheels in the arms of Voltlage and of Osnabrück County, green is stressing the rural character of Neuenkirchen. The arms were designed in 1984 by Ulf-Dietrich Korn.
