The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a red-white-red horizontal triband with ratio of stripes approx. 1:4:1. The coat of arms is in the middle of the central stripe.

Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Argent with chief embattled Gules and base wavy Azure, a watermill's wheel Azure.
Meaning:
The arms are symbolising the old watermill in Essen (see old arms). The waves are symbolising the prefix "Bad", which was added in 1901 to the name of the municipality. The chief is symbolising the castle from the arms of the former Wittlage County, to which the area belonged until 1972.
The arms were approved in 1975.

Description of flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a red-white-red horizontal triband with ratio of stripes approx. 2:9:2. The coat of arms is in the middle of the central stripe.

Former Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Vert, a watermill' wheel Or, issuant from wheel in sinister chief and in dexter base two pairs of barrulets wavy Argent.
Meaning:
The green colour is symbolising the surrounding forests in the former Wittlage County.The millwheel is representing the 300-years old watermill located in the street Bergstraße in Essen. It belonged to the estate, which became core of the settlement. The mill today is a historical monument. The waves are symbolising the prefix "Bad", which was added in 1901 to the name of the municipality.
The arms were approved in 1961 by district governor (Regierungspräsident) of Osnabrück.
