Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Argent, a 5-spokes wheel Gules, issuant from wheel a demi-eagle Gules armed Or.
Meaning:
The local castle was one of the main castles of the Bishops of Osnabrück from the 12th-17th century. Bishop Konrad IV (1482-1508), Count of Rietberg and Bishop of Osnabrück, extended the castle of Iburg, which had been residence of the bishops for more than 500 years since the 11th century. The arms are a combination of the eagle from the arms of the Counts of Rietberg, and the wheel from those of the Bishopric of Osnabrück, modified by a smaller number of spokes. They are based on the oldest seal of Iburg market town, proven since 1532. The seal displayed both elements in a shield parted per fess. The curent arms were approved in 1957 to Iburg, which became a city in 1959 and and a spa with the prefix "Bad" in 1969. Silver and red are also the historical colours of the Osnabrück Region.
